WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN ACCOUNTABILITY BUDDY
An accountability partner should be someone who understands why your goal is important to you
There are three things that you need to know about your accountability partner:
- You need to know what their purpose is
- You need to know what their mission is
- And you need to know what their values are
They will support you, celebrate with you and kick your butt whenever necessary. They must be brutally honest, direct and informative
They must have excellent listening skills and be able to ask the right questions, that enable your growth
They must have different strengths and weaknesses to you
If you recognize that you and your partner(s) are not vibing, don’t hesitate to let them know how you feel. If necessary you may have to find someone else
GUIDELINES FOR WORKING WITH ANN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER
Plan and Set
- A regular time to connect
- How you’ll connect
- Put it in your calendar
- Treat it as Fix
- Set a length of time for your check-ins
Choose One Thing to work on
If your buddy starts to disappear or misses a scheduled time more than once – politely end the partnership
Bite size, achievable progress
Base all your communication around positive reinforcement
Adjust accordingly
Remember: Nothing is permanent
